Simon Ighofose

PyroGenesys CEO Simon Ighofose, is inspired by the potential of Bioenergy and Biorenewable technologies, to lead the rapid transition to a “fossil-free” global economy. In 2011, having left a career in Local Government to set up a business in Nigeria, Simon realised that the lack of access to consistent, reliable, affordable electricity was seriously hampering industrial development across Africa. A chance encounter with an open-source web article on the use of pyrolysis to produce renewable diesel and jet fuel, authored by two Aston University academics, proved to be an epiphany! Upon returning to the UK, Simon enrolled on the Aston University Engineering Foundation programme and spent 6 years retraining as a Chemical Engineer, specialising in the production of value-added chemicals from the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass. Simon’s dream from the outset was to invent a world-leading energy from waste technology and this ambition was reinforced by a work placement on the European Bioenergy Research Institute Pyrogas Project. PyroGenesys was incorporated in May 2017 and the company’s development has received notable support from Climate-KIC, the Smart Concept Fund, Food Innovation Award and most recently Energy Catalyst. Simon’s dream will soon be realised with the commissioning of the 20 kWe PyroPower prototype.
